The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children receive an orthodontic exam by the age of seven. At this time, enough permanent teeth have come in and enough jaw growth has occurred so that problems such as cross-bites, under-bites, and crowding can be evaluated. Occasionally, early treatment at a younger age (before growth is complete and all permanent teeth are in) may simplify later treatment. This can make it less invasive, which can prevent the need for prolonged treatment, jaw surgery, or extractions in many instances.

However, not all children need early orthodontic treatment and will have better results when most of the permanent teeth have erupted. Each case is evaluated individually and Dr. Nguyen will choose the treatment plan that is best for the health and aesthetics of your child, and will keep in mind what is most cost-effective for the parent. He will discuss with you whether your child needs one-phase versus two-phases of treatment.

If you decide to hold off on treatment, we will continue to monitor your child's growth and development at complimentary periodic visits. Early childhood evaluation is also complimentary in our office, so that you can make an informed decision about the best time for your child to start orthodontic treatment.
