First Phase Treatment | Resting Period | Second Phase Treatment

Sometimes children between the ages of 7-8 exhibit early signs of dental misalignment and jaw problems as they grow and develop. Some of the problems and reasons for beginning orthodontic treatment at an early age include:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Crowded, misplaced or blocked out teeth
  • Habits such as mouth-breathing, thumb-sucking or finger-sucking
  • Excessively protruding upper front teeth
  • Large overbites
  • Upper and lower jaws that are growing out of proportion with one another

Since children grow rapidly, they may benefit enormously from an early phase of orthodontic treatment. Early treatment presents the opportunity to:

  • Direct the growth of the upper and lower jaws
  • Reduce the need to extract permanent teeth
  • Correct harmful habits such as thumb or finger-sucking
  • Lower the risk of accidents to protruded upper front teeth
  • Guide incoming permanent teeth into desirable positions
  • Potentially simplify or shorten treatment time in the second phase

Thus, a good foundation can be established, providing adequate room for eruption of all permanent teeth and guiding the jaws into a more favorable position.

In this phase, retainers are worn to maintain the results of the first phase and to allow the remaining permanent teeth to erupt. The final positions of the remaining permanent teeth have not yet been established and some irregularities may develop. A completion of the orthodontic alignment will be accomplished in the second phase of treatment. During this time, periodic appointments for observation and retainer adjustments will be necessary, usually on a three- to four-month basis.

The second phase is initiated when all permanent teeth have erupted, and usually requires braces on all the teeth for a period of 16-24 months. The goal of the second phase is to position all the permanent teeth. This will help maximize their appearance and function. Retainers are worn after this phase to ensure you retain your beautiful smile.
